Studying to become a conference interpreter

Conference interpreting is a fascinating yet tough and demanding profession, for which one must be fully prepared.  Some people think that being fluent in two or more languages is enough to be an interpreter.   Nothing further from the truth!

A conference interpreter must, of course, be fluent in his/her working languages.  In addition, an interpreter must possess the right skills for this profession such as fluent speech, mental dexterity and the capability to analyse discourses.  But this is not enough.  The above skills may be learnt and developed through sound, quality training, and therefore an interpreter must be in possession of a degree (such as, but not limited to, a degree in Translating & Interpreting); and it is highly recommendable to supplement this with a Master’s degree or a specialised course in Interpreting.

When choosing where to study, it is essential to make sure that the teaching meets quality standards and that the teachers are also working as interpreters.
